The US is giving an average of 1.37 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine a day – a rate driven down by last week’s extreme weather\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
Mutations to the spike protein – especially those seen in the South African and Brazilian variants of the virus – make it harder to ‘see’ for antibodies triggered by the current vaccines.\u00a0<\/p>\n
That, in turn, makes those antibodies less effective at binding to the virus and blocking it from infecting human cells.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The South African variant known as B1351, for example, reduces the potency of antibodies from Moderna’s vaccine by about six-fold.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
Antibody-binding for Pfizer’s vaccine was reduced by about two-thirds in lab studies.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Although that may sound like a considerable reduction, it’s still more than enough for the vaccines to be protective, at the very least at preventing severe COVID-19, and considering that there are only 22 confirmed cases in 10 states so far.\u00a0<\/p>\n
‘At this time, available information suggests that the FDA-authorized vaccines remain effective in protecting the American public against currently circulating strains of SARS-CoV-2,’ the FDA said in its statement.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, scientists at the University of California, San Francisco found that yet another variant is now not only dominant in 44 of the state’s 58 counties, but appears to be more infectious.\u00a0<\/p>\n
They found that if one household member was infected with the variant, known as L452R, 35 percent of others under the same roof got infected too, on average.\u00a0<\/p>\n
By comparison, older versions of the virus infect an average of 26 percent of household members.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Their studies did not determine whether the variant might be resistant to vaccines, but antibodies from prior infection weren’t as potent against it.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
The FDA made its comments as part of a newly updated guidance for companies making vaccines, tests and therapeutics for COVID-19, in light of emerging variants.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The emergence of new variants that are considered more infectious has prompted the US government to step up efforts to track coronavirus mutations and keep vaccines and treatments effective against any new variants.<\/p>\n

Mutations are tracked by sequencing the genomes of samples of the virus.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Last week, US labs sequenced and published the genomes of more than 9,000 virus samples – a massive improvement from the 136 samples that were sequenced the week of January 16.\u00a0<\/p>\n
But the US still lags far behind other countries, like the UK, for surveillance.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
As part of its updated guidance, the FDA recommended that vaccine makers test any modified vaccines in both previously unvaccinated people and vaccinated people.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The manufacturers should compare the immune response of a modified vaccine against both the new variant as well as the original virus.<\/p>\n
The FDA also recommended monitoring test subjects’ safety for at least seven days, to support emergency use authorization for modified vaccines.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/p>\n
